SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) – News about the Indianapolis 500 planning to shorten its schedule for the month of May has made its way through the business community in Speedway.

And some business owners say with the track pulling back, it’s more important than ever for the town to come up with things other than racing to attract people.

Track officials announced this week that for the third year in a row, they’re condensing the Indianapolis 500 schedule.

They’re reducing the pre-race event schedule by a week, in an attempt to make it more convenient for the race teams, and more cost-effective for the track.

Operations like Dawson’s on Main, a Speedway restaurant, say having fewer days of events leading up to the 500 will hurt business.

But they also say a redevelopment plan aimed at creating more restaurants, shops, and amenities in Speedway could eventually make up for that.

“And I think if people had an opportunity and places to come other than the race track, that they would come and shop and eat and have fun,” said Chris Hill, co-owner of Dawson’s.

Scott Harris is with the Speedway Redevelopment Commission, which is overseeing the project.

“There’s going to be a water garden, there are going to be sidewalks, there are going to be areas where restaurants can have outdoor seating during the summer months,” Harris said.

In short, the business areas near the track will take on a different look.

Making that happen means a lot of road construction right now, making it difficult for the businesses on Main Street.

They are looking toward what they hope are better days.

Chris Hill, the co-owner of Dawson’s, said, “I think, at the end of the day, if we’re here and we can get over the hump, I think we’re in a pretty good position to be a mainstay here on Main Street.”
